In June 2015, when two Israeli hikers were leaving the Ein Bobin spring, he signaled them to stop and asked for their help.
They stopped their car next to him and after asking them "if there is water in the spring," he shot them at point-blank range and fled.
The two young men, about 25 years old, were seriously and slightly injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Doctors later pronounced Gonen dead.
