Muhammad al-Hindi is the Deputy Secretary-General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and a member of the movement’s Political Bureau.
He was born in Gaza City on May 15, 1955, to a Palestinian family originally from the city of Haifa.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in medicine in Cairo in 1980 and worked as a physician at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. He later served as director of the Palestinian Center for Research and Studies in Gaza.
He joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1972 and contributed to the establishment of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement. He has been active in the movement since its founding and rose through its organizational ranks, eventually becoming head of the political department and a member of the Political Bureau since 2018.
He represented the movement in the Higher Follow-Up Committee during the Second Intifada, as well as in several internal Palestinian faction dialogues and ceasefire negotiations.
In addition, he headed the movement’s delegation on official visits to various countries.
He was arrested by Israel in 1987 for one year, and again in 1989 for four years.
He was also arrested six times by Palestinian security forces and was the target of two assassination attempts after Israeli Air Force planes bombed the headquarters of the research center he directed in Gaza in 2004 and 2007.
